There are rarities in the truck universe then are super rarities, such as this 1928 Nelson-LeMoon Stake Bed Truck (Model HB21). This example, which is one of only about 3,000 vehicles made between 1910 and 1939, has undergone a complete frame-off restoration and has a Waukesha straight six-cylinder engine, a rebuilt transmission and rear end.
“In sizes to suit all capacities” was the motto, originally known as the Nelson & LeMoon Company, later to be known as just LeMoon, was a Chicago-based manufacturer in existence for about 30 years and was in direct competition with International Harvester trucks that were produced just down the street. Estimates are the company only made 3,000 vehicles during that time and very few remain intact today. The Chicago factory was located at 855 North Kedzie Avenue.
In the later years the company diversified into building taxi cabs and a motor home/office designed and marketed by Brook Stevens. In 1939, owner A. R. LeMoon halted production and purchased the Chicago branch of the Federal Truck Company and became the Federal-LeMoon Truck Company.
Nestled in the small town of Marseilles, Illinois, is the Thompson family, originally led by the late Eugene Thompson who planted his roots and took up an honorable life as a member of the National Guard, a truck enthusiast and a dearly loved father. Spending more than three decades dedicated to the restoration of a single find, Thompson and his son, Kenneth, restored and rebuilt an extremely unique, possibly one-of-a-kind Chicago-based vehicle, this 1928 Nelson-LeMoon.
“I only know about one other truck like this one and it’s somewhere in Ohio,” said Kenneth Thompson. This particular example was owned by a warehouse owner who was not willing to part with it until 1979. After they bought it, Eugene dedicated his free time into perfecting its restoration. This truck was painted in 2010, the same year the restoration was completed.
The paint and trim are in overall very good order. A Boyce Motometer resides atop the radiator. The original glass panes are in satisfactory order and intact. The body is straight and solid, and there’s plenty of room behind the cab for whatever you need to haul. The cab has been fabricated from White Oak and restored to lookalike original condition and has a solid flatbed with staked sides.
This LeMoon rolls on Milemarker bias-ply tires, size 7.50-20 at every wheel. Each tire is mounted to a vented, steel wheel painted body color with red center caps. In back are a set of duallys but please note that the tires are old.
Under the hood is a Waukesha inline six-cylinder engine, which has a non-pressurized cooling system and a manually primed fuel system. Backing up this motor is a rebuilt four-speed manual transmission and rear end.
Inside, the brown bench and padded backing cushions are in very good order. There’s no carpeting as one would expect and the wooden headliner above is in great condition. A four-spoke, brass steering wheel faces upright while the inner door panels are in as good of shape as the rest of the newly hewn cab. A two-tone metal and center-mounted instrument panel had a full array of gauges for the time but the speedometer, fuel and temp gauges are inoperable and there is no horn. A floor-mounted shift lever and handbrake complete the interior.
