Description
This is a working vintage Weston foot-candle meter model 614 featuring a model 856 type 5 Photronic cell. This light meter measures room lighting from over three ranges of intensity, 0-500 foot-candles, 0-250 foot-candles and 0-100 foot-candles.
The meter comes in a sturdy case and features an adjustable folding light sensor.
It dates to somewhere between 1934 and 1950 and was manufactured by the Weston Electrical Instrument Corp of Newark, New Jersey.
Pointed at a table lamp, it registers a reading on the ‘HIGH’ scale, a lower reading on the ‘MED’ scale and a lower reading on the ‘LOW’ scale.
In the ‘OFF’ position there is no positive measurement.
Pointed at a low wattage lamp, the unit made the following measurements:
Low range 100 foot-candles,
Medium range 95 foot-candles,
High range 90 foot-candles.
The measurements seem consistent from scale to scale and more granular with higher range settings.
I have no way to determine the accuracy of the measurements but they seem reasonable.
The case shows small scratches and slight discoloring and there is a small crack near the attachment of the carrying strap to the case on one side (see photos).
The range knob arrow is slightly offset from the range legends (see photos).
The leather carrying strap shows some wear (see photos).
All in all, this is in excellent condition for a unit that is at least 70 years old.
